Do I Have Toenail Fungus?

When fungal toenail infections develop, they are generally not serious, however they may take several months to treat. Toenail fungus begins on the outer edges of the nail, and can gradually spread to the middle of the nail if treatment does not promptly begin. Common symptoms may include a yellowing and thickening of the affected nail, and it may become brittle. The type of fungus that causes this infection typically lives and thrives in warm and moist environments, and can be found in public pools, shower room floors, and surrounding areas. It's suggested to wear appropriate shoes while in these types of places, in addition to wearing clean shoes and socks. If you notice toenail fungus developing, it's suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can expertly treat this condition.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot & Ankle Specialists of Central Ohio. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Gahanna, Newark, Columbus, and Lancaster, OH . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

How Do Ingrown Toenails Develop?

The medical condition that is known as ingrown toenails can produce severe pain and discomfort. It is defined as the outer edges of the nail growing into the surrounding skin, and typically affects the big toe. It can occur as a result of wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, or from improperly trimming the toenails. Additional reasons why this may happen can include excessively sweaty feet, also referred to as plantar hyperhidrosis, as well as genetic factors, or from a toe injury. Mild relief may be found when the affected toe is soaked in warm water, followed by using a piece of cotton to gently separate the nail from the skin. For more severe cases, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot & Ankle Specialists of Central Ohio. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Our feet provide support for the overall body. When the feet are properly taken care of, daily activities may easily be completed. The feet may feel better when your shoes fit correctly, and your toenails are frequently trimmed. Many patients find it relaxing to wash and dry their feet daily, followed by using a good moisturizer. This may help to maintain soft skin, which may possibly prevent cracked heels. It is suggested to patients who prefer to get pedicures to ensure that the salon is using clean and sterile instruments. If you would like additional information about the importance of everyday foot care, please consult with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Central Ohio. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Patients who lead a sedentary lifestyle may be susceptible to poor circulation. Additionally, poor circulation may develop if medical conditions exist such as diabetes, obesity, or peripheral artery disease (PAD). Circulation may improve when a healthy lifestyle is practiced. This can consist of frequently performing a gentle exercise routine, drinking plenty of water daily, and maintaining a healthy weight. If you have symptoms of poor circulation, it is advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.
