5 Ways to Ease Your Bunion Pain

bunionsIf you live with a bunion, then you know how uncomfortable having a protruding bump on your big toe joint can be. Over time as the bunion worsens, they can cause pain and discomfort that can get in the way of your everyday activities. Unfortunately, they are often seen as such a common foot condition that many don’t come in to see our podiatrists until the condition and pain is severe. At Foot and Ankle Specialists of Central Ohioour podiatrists offer a range of treatments and solutions to address your bunion pain.

What causes bunions?

Bunions develop as a result of a combination of genetics, shoes that are too tight or don’t fit properly, poor foot mechanics, and other conditions like arthritis. As you get older, you also become more susceptible to bunions.

Consider these podiatrist-recommended ways to relieve your bunion pain:

  1. Change your footwear. Opt for shoes with wide toe boxes that allow plenty of room for the toes, and limit use of high heels and other tightly-fitted shoes that squeeze the toe.
  2. Use protective padding, taping, and specialized braces to protect and reposition the big toe joint. Having an extra layer can help ease pain and reduce inflammation.
  3. Get custom orthotics created for your shoes. Unlike generic ones, custom orthotics address the specific problems that plague your feet, like flat feet and overpronation. Inserting orthotics into your shoes can not only provide better support for your feet, but they can also help relieve stress on the big toe area.
  4. Get physical therapy to increase flexibility and strength, and alleviate pain. Physical therapy can also greatly improve your recovery after surgery.
  5. Get Lapiplasty, an innovative bunion surgery that 3-D corrects the unstable joint that causes bunions. Unlike traditional bunion surgeries, Lapiplasty allows patients to walk within a few days after surgery and has a very low recurrence rate.
